Professor Maciej Tomaszewski
Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine · Clinician scientist in hypertension, cardiovascular genomics and kidney biology
- MD
- PhD
- Specialist in internal medicine
- PGCert Academic Practice
Maciej Tomaszewski is a physician and clinician scientist in cardiovascular medicine. His research addresses the genetic and molecular mechanisms of hypertension and chronic kidney disease, is published in journals including Nature Genetics, Nature Communications and the European Heart Journal, and has produced the world's largest resource of human kidney tissue characterised at multiple molecular levels, now exceeding 1,000 samples and the backbone of the international 1000 Kidney Project.
He is a specialist in internal medicine with some twenty years' experience of developing and delivering acute medical, outpatient cardiovascular and cross-specialty services in three countries, and leads a hypertension clinic in one of the busiest hospitals in Europe. His clinical research centres on difficult-to-treat hypertension: he was chief investigator of the multicentre OUTREACH trial of urinary biomarkers and blood-pressure control, and his studies established liquid-chromatography urine analysis as a direct, non-invasive and objective screening test for non-adherence to antihypertensive treatment, now embedded in diagnostic pathways for resistant hypertension and in clinical guidelines internationally.
He served as President of the International Society of Hypertension (2020–2022) and on the Board of the World Hypertension League, has led long-term collaborations with global health organisations, and has secured more than £20 million in competitive research funding over the past decade. He holds a postgraduate certificate in academic practice, has taught in higher education for more than twenty years, and has supervised and mentored clinicians and scientists who now hold senior academic positions.
Through Veritas Clinical Innovations he advises companies, investigators, investors and institutions on cardiovascular genomics and biomarker programmes, trial design in hypertension and kidney disease, treatment adherence and translational research strategy, in an independent, personal capacity.
