Professor Mateusz Siedliński

Genetic epidemiologist · Mendelian randomisation, population genetics and immune mechanisms of hypertension

  • MSc Biotechnology
  • PhD (cum laude)
  • DSc (dr hab. n. med.)

Mateusz Siedliński is a molecular biologist and genetic epidemiologist working at the interface of vascular biology, immunology and population genetics. He graduated in biotechnology in Kraków in 2005 and obtained his PhD cum laude from the University of Groningen in the Netherlands in 2009 for work on the genetic and environmental determinants of lung function in the general population, followed by postdoctoral training in Groningen and at the Channing Laboratory of Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School in Boston, in the genetics of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Since 2012 he has built an independent research programme on hypertension in Kraków, first using vascular transcriptomics to identify sphingosine kinase 1 as a modulator of angiotensin II-induced vascular dysfunction, and then applying Mendelian randomisation in UK Biobank to show causal roles of white blood cells in blood-pressure regulation (Circulation, 2020) and of elevated blood pressure in brain structural changes and cognitive impairment (European Heart Journal, 2023). He obtained his habilitation in 2018 and was promoted to University Professor in 2023.

He has been principal investigator of three National Science Centre grants and leads the Polish partner of a European consortium on heart failure with preserved ejection fraction, with external funding of around PLN 6 million. He has published more than 90 works, including first-author papers in Circulation, the European Heart Journal, Thorax and the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, and his work has been recognised with the Jędrzej Śniadecki Award of the Polish Academy of Sciences (2020, team award) and the Tadeusz Browicz Prize of the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences (2023).

He supervises doctoral and master's students and teaches research methodology and internal medicine. Through Veritas Clinical Innovations he advises on genetic epidemiology, Mendelian randomisation, population and biobank studies and the molecular biology of cardiovascular disease, in an independent, personal capacity.
